TONITA NAMPEYO -Hopi
Tonita is the oldest living matriarch of the Nampeyo family! A daughter of Fannie Nampeyo, she learned to make pottery from her mother and grandmother, Nampeyo, both legendary Hopi potters! Measuring 6" in diameter by 4" high, this bowl is a rare piece from Tonita in that usually it is her "Migration" pattern pieces that are offered for sale. She has chosen to remain a very traditional potter, handcoiling and handpainting her potteries as has been done on the Hopi mesas for generations. The outdoor firing, also traditional, instead of that done in a kiln, gives this pot subtle variations in hue that traditionally fired Hopi pottery is known for. The composition and placement of her designs on this pot are superb!
